About Malahide Historical Society

AIMS
Malahide Historical Society was founded in 1978 with the following aims:

MUSEUM
The last aim was achieved in 1988 when the Cottage Museum was opened in the grounds of Malahide Castle, just inside the main gates on the Back Road. In 2007 the museum moved to new premises in the Craft Courtyard adjacent to the rear entrance to the Castle. It is well worth a visit to view the large collection of artifacts and memorabilia related to Malahide. Donations of items of local interest are always most welcome. We do not have a regular caretaker at present but depend on the voluntary attendance of members. From May to September inclusive the museum will be open on Saturdays and Sundays from 2 pm until 4.30 pm. It may also be open on Thursdays and Fridays on an occasional basis during the same hours.

PUBLICATIONS
Three, some years four, issues of the NEWSLETTER are sent to members each year. These contain articles of local historical interest. Complete bound sets of the seventy plus back numbers are maintained in Malahide Library and in the Cottage Museum. Copies of back numbers and a comprehensive index of sources for local historical research are available at a cost of €2 per copy at the Cottage Museum or from the address below. The index can be viewed on-line at this site.

LECTURES
The Society organises regular lectures, usually on the second Tuesday of the months from September though April on a wide variety of topics. See Society Diary. These take place in the Presbyterian Church Hall, Dublin Road, Malahide at 8 pm.

ARTS SEMINAR
A day long Arts Seminar also organised annually with nationally renowned speakers.

'Malahide Houses of Note' Project
This on-going project aims to collect as much history as possible about significant houses in the Malahide area, of which over seventy have so far been identified. Society members are encouraged to 'adopt' a house and research it's history and former residents.
Anyone (including non members) wishing to become involved or with information to contribute is asked to contact the project co-ordinator Michael Ryan at 43 Biscayne, Malahide, Co. Dublin, Ireland, tel. 01 8451967 or write to the e-mail address below.

Shops, Cinemas and other Businesses in Malahide

We are seeking information about businesses in Malahide in the past.

SCHOOLS PROJECT
The Society organises and sponsors an annual history competition for 4th, 5th and 6th class pupils in the three local primary schools. The principal objective is to foster an interest in Malahide's past. The winning entries are exhibited in Malahide Library.

MEMBERSHIP
Malahide Historical Society is seeking new members. The subscription is €15 and this includes copies of the Newsletter and a preferential rate for attending the annual Arts Seminar. No special skills are required; just an interest in the past and Malahide's past in particular.  Your support would be much appreciated
